A stockinette stitch scarf is very simple to make once you know how to knit and purl.
You will need:
- Yarn (any size or type)
- Needles (whatever size is recommended for your yarn or that gives you the gauge you want)
- I used Bernat Blanket yarn in Country Blue and size 15 needles for mine.
Cast on until you have the desired width for your scarf. (Keep in mind that stitches spread out a bit as you knit them, so your scarf will be a little wider than your cast on stitches.)
Row 1 and all odd rows: knit all stitches
Row 2 and all even rows: purl all stitches
Continue until scarf reaches desired length.
Bind off.
Variations:
–Stockinette stitch has a tendency to roll back at the sides.
If this bothers you, try adding a garter stitch border to help it lay flat:
First 6 rows: knit all stitches
Row 7 and all odd rows: knit all stitches
Row 8 and all even rows: k4, p to last 4 sts, k4
Continue until scarf reaches desired length.
Last 6 rows: knit all sts
Bind off.
I don’t like this variation as much in bulky yarn, so I knit a small sample with a different yarn:
–To make an infinity scarf like I did, sew the ends together.
To wrap it twice, the length should be 56-60 inches. To wrap it 3 times, the length should be closer to 80 inches. Try it on before you bind off to make sure it’s the size you want.
